The Rush for Oil – Several Attempts to Control the Oil Wealth (2)

Red Line Agreement – Turkish Petroleum was established in 1912 to seek concession in the Middle East. Claim for ownership became a political struggle and had commercial interest. After the First World War, Britain and France had upper hand and after several years of negotiations, America was joined in the syndicate in 1928 and the countries of ‘oil interest’ in the Middle East was delineated with the so-called ‘Red Line’. Major companies signed the Red Line Agreement, with the support and connivance of their countries.

Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (23 March 1869 – 20 July 1955) was an Armenian-British businessman and philanthropist. He played a major role in making the petroleum reserves of the Middle East available to Western development. By the end of his life he had become one of the world's wealthiest individuals and his art acquisitions considered one of the greatest private collections. Culled from Wikipedia

SANDSTONE CLASSIFACATION BY FOLK

QFR diagram for Folk's sandstone classification

Folk proposed a classification for sandstones based on the relative abundances of quartz (Q), feldspars (F), and rock fragments (R). These are the main poles of the classification diagram.
Volcanic rock fragments (VRFs), metamorphic rock fragments (MRFs) and sedimentary rock fragments (SRFs).

The petroleum geologist, for example, is interested in identifying rock types in outcrops, drilling cuttings, and core samples. Standardization and a classification scheme can make his work easier.

HA & HZ Wells

Vertical well – the apparent deviation angle with respect to bedding is less than 30°

Moderately deviated well – the apparent deviation angle is between 30° and 60°

High angle (HA) well – the apparent deviation angle is between 60° and 80°

Horizontal (HZ) well – the apparent deviation angle is greater than 80°

ØTo drill HA/HZ wells, its either you use geometric means or geo-steering means

ØGeometric means is basing your decisions/trajectory only on the seismic targets (TVD, northing, easting, etc)

ØGeo-steering means deciding the direction in which to drill from knowledge of the geology and from measurements taken while drilling

What do you think?

The Rush for Oil – Several Attempts to Control the Oil Wealth (1)

Standard Oil Co. Inc. was an American oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Established in 1870 as a corporation in Ohio, it was the largest oil refiner in the world. Its controversial history as one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that Standard was an illegal monopoly.

Standard Oil dominated the oil products market initially through horizontal integration in the refining sector, then, in later years vertical integration; the company was an innovator in the development of the business trust. The Standard Oil trust streamlined production and logistics, lowered costs, and undercut competitors. "Trust-busting" critics accused Standard Oil of using aggressive pricing to destroy competitors and form a monopoly that threatened consumers.

John D. Rockefeller was a founder, chairman and major shareholder. With the dissolution of the Standard Oil trust into 33 smaller companies, Rockefeller became the richest man in the world. Other notable Standard Oil principals include Henry Flagler, developer of Florida's Florida East Coast Railway and resort cities, and Henry H. Rogers, who built the Virginian Railway.

For me sha, if the USA and Russia contributed about 95 per cent of world supply by then, it means that any company that is dominant in USA was also dominant in the world.

Sand Production Prediction

Oil companies are in business to produce oil and/or gas, and not to produce water or sand, lol.

Sand production from unconsolidated reservoirs has a significant impact on the well operation and the economics of oil and gas production.

Sand production is a 2 stage process (failure of rock & transportation of the failed material into the wellbore). These 2 processes have to occur for sand production to be observed.

Some ways employed when deciding whether to install sand exclusion techniques:
1.  Field experience (check nearby wells drilled if there was sand production)
2.  Petrophysical logs (e.g. acoustic logs; short travel times indicate low porosity and hard, dense rock, while long travel times are associated with soft, low density, high porosity rock) and core analysis
3.  Rock strength measurements (wellsite rock strength estimation & rock mechanical measurements)

Multi-lateral Wells

Picture from petoil.blogspot.com

This can be defined as a multi-branch well which has more than one vertical, inclined or horizontal hole drilled from a single platform and connected back to a single wellbore.

According to PetroWiki, multilateral wells are new evolution of horizontal wells in which several wellbore branches radiate from the main borehole.

Time is money, they say, lol. Some companies want to get much oil to the surface at the earliest possible time, to increase the return on investment, and multi-lateral wells might be employed.

The Importance of a Strong Cover Letter

Whilst applying for a job is relatively easy (certainly through CV-Library), making a strong application isn’t so simple.

Along with a well-structured, neatly formatted and grammatically correct CV, your cover letter needs to be concise, tailored for each role you apply for and most importantly contain a few key elements which can help you stand out from the crowd and get that vital interview.

A cover letter is a formal introduction to you, your CV and your reasoning for wanting to work for the company you are applying to. A good cover letter tells the recruiter of your passion and interest in the field you are applying to work in, it highlights two or three key skills that can be brought to the business, and ultimately your desire to meet for an interview.

Extended Reach Wells

This can be defined as wells having a horizontal displacement to true vertical depth ratio of at least 2:1 and could get to the current maximum of about 11:1.

On the 28th of January 2011, one of the world’s longest boreholes was drilled at the Odoptu field, Sakhalin-I with a measured total depth of 12345m, horizontal displacement of 11475m, and true vertical depth of 1784m.

ExxonMobil Donates $250,000 to Support Ebola Response Efforts in Nigeria

Contagious Ebola virus

ExxonMobil has provided $250,000 in emergency funding to help fight the Ebola epidemic in Nigeria. The grant to the CDC Foundation will enable the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work with the Nigerian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to produce a two-day training program for health care workers to enhance their skills in infection control.

In addition, ExxonMobil’s affiliates in Nigeria have also provided materials and expert support, including:
1.  Personal protective equipment and non-contact infrared thermometers to the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health
2.  Vehicles to support the Port Harcourt Ebola Emergency Operations Center
3.  A team of experts from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, who will train health care workers in Akwa Ibom State.

Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN) and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPNL) are affiliates of Exxon Mobil Corporation. The donation was being made by the ExxonMobil Foundation.

Do you know?

Deltas are ‘wedge-shaped’ packet of sediments and generally have coarsening-up successions.

Deformation in deltas could be associated with subsidence, growth faults, roll-over anticlines, compaction, mud diapirs and soft-sediment deformation.

Understanding of the origin of a sandbody (e.g. from cores and log analysis) may be used to infer (predict) the 3D geometry of the sandbody.
