The Niger Delta

A sedimentary basin.

A prograding depositional complex within the Cenozoic formation of Southern Nigeria.

Extends from about longitude 3° to 9° E and latitude 4° 30’ to 5° 20’ N.

Some deltas are dominated by a single process, others have influences from other processes. See the triangle below showing classification of deltas in terms of rivers, waves and tide influences. The more the distance from each vertex of the triangle, the more the influence it gets from other processes. Can you spot the Niger Delta there?

Classification of deltas in terms of river, wave and tide influence, simplified from Galloway (1975), with delta models from Fisher et al. (1969). Culled from IPE
