MAIN PRESSURES IN THE RESERVOIR

Overburden pressure is the pressure exerted by the total weight of the overlying formation. It is a function of the height of the rock column and the bulk density of the rock.

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by the weight of a static column of fluid that is independent of the dimension and geometry of the fluid column. It is exerted equally in all directions.

Formation pore pressure is the pressure exerted by the pore fluids within the rock/formation.

Fracture pressure is the upper limit at which a rock can withstand pressure from the mud column. It is the minimum lateral stress that must be overcome to fracture the rock.
